WILDCATS BOURKE RUN - 06

May, like any other month really, is a good time of the year to go for a ride, so with three weeks notice from the members that they wanted to go somewhere different, Psycho organised a trip to Bourke.

The purpose of this trip was two fold. One was to ease Slippery back into the saddle as she had just got her bike back from the repair shop following her attempt to scrape some paint off during a previous ride, (bloody roundabouts), and the second was to satisfy KB’s curiosity, as she had never been to Bourke before. A chance to have an overnighter in a different town seemed like a good idea at the time also.

Ten of the Walgett members and one on his first ride with the Wildcats, packed up and left on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning and headed off in the direction of the famed black stump.

The ride across to Brewarrina was pretty uneventful with everyone zoning out and taking in the sights, lots and lots of pot holes, endless sweeping plains, drought riddled paddocks, the occasional bit of roadkill left behind by the trucks, more drought affected paddocks and lots and lots of nothing.

Coffee and smoke break in Brewarrina. The old Greek café, one of only six authentic Greek cafes left in NSW according to Rowdy, was a welcome sight. The hospitality was brilliant. The place had a mini bus load of grey nomads inside having morning tea and when they noticed the bikes, you couldn’t really miss us, turn up, they were taken back to their youth and started reminiscing about when they were young, like us.

The ride to Bourke was pretty much the same as the trip to Bre although at one point we did see a mob of close to a hundred emus doing a runner through the dust as we approached.

When we hit Bourke, it was straight out to the North Bourke Pub or The Northy as it is now known. A few cleansing ales a couple of games of pool and then on into the Port-Of-Bourke Hotel where we made camp for the night.

The publican is a terrific bloke, made us feel welcome and looked after us really well. One of his worries was the safety of the bikes, no problem there, the back yard of the pub a bit like Fort Knox. The accommodation was excellent, the tucker was great and plenty of it. The locals were friendly enough. Just ask Shane ha ha, he has a little story about toothy (ie false) drinks. A good night was had by all.

A good ride home the next day with a stop at the Café in Bre. The lady owner turned sixty the night before and she shared her birthday cake with us. Then back to Slip and Rowdy’s for a late BBQ lunch.

Overall, a good weekend was had by all and thanks go to Psycho for organising it, good job.

SANTA

PS Just to add a little extra TIT BIT, KB had her first spill involving an altercation with a dog.  Both she and the dog came off second best, but she got the upper hand leaving one dead dog.  No picture for the road kill award but shit on the bike and witnesses to provide any proof.
