Crusty does the Demons!

or the Crusty Demons East Coast Carnage Tour - Tamworth 2006

.

From a compilation of film footage gathered by Jon Freeman and Dana Nicholson over a period of a couple of years and released in 1994 as a video called “Crusty Demons of Dirt, to a full blown cult, another nine videos, the creation of a new way to have fun on two wheels that is called Freestyle Motocross ( FMX ) and its worldwide recognition as an extreme sport, is an effort not to be sneezed at. So, when the chance arose to see it in the flesh, in the form of the “Crusty Demons East Coast Carnage Tour” that was holding one of its regional shows at Tamworth in NSW, it did not take much convincing for Kaz and I to throw a bit of gear on the bikes and head off inland.

Midday saw us rolling into Hooky’s place, having taken up his kind offer of a bed for the night, and then, after killing two birds with one stone by having our Slopes and Plains AMC meeting prior to heading off to the show, we finally arrived at the venue, and I should point out, so had about ten thousand other people, getting a parking spot anywhere close was next to impossible, and the size of the crowd was still growing, I don’t think I would be far wrong by saying that every kid from Tamworth and its outlying areas was there, along with a lot of kids at heart as well.

The show started right on time with the emcee doing an introduction session, they  then started mini stampedes of kids all over the place as free stuff was thrown into the crowd, this was repeated at least half a dozen times during the show, much to the delight of the luckier folk with longer arms than the rest, an Iron Gut Contest with an awful concoction of ingredients mixed up by one of the local Tamworth guest Crusty Babes, saw a couple of strong hearted, but obviously weak stomached contestants, well beaten by a bloke who looked like he had seen, and probably been in, a few of those kind of contests before. Next up saw an endurance event with a couple of blokes being picked from the crowd, dropping their dacks, and getting a bit of a spanking session from the local Crusty Babe, she got stuck into them with an overgrown version of a ping pong bat with holes forming a smiley face on it, a few wacks later, saw the smile on their faces very quickly transferred to another part of their anatomy.

With the crowd warmed up, it was on with the show, and what a show these riders put on, they were doing things that I wouldn’t be game to do with the bike parked on its side-stand and surrounded by mattresses, they were so good that they made it look easy, but when you stop and think about things like them perfecting back-flips you have got to admire the amount of balls it must have taken to finally go beyond the point of no return, especially with the knowledge that its really going to hurt if they got it wrong, and even more so, when it did go wrong, to get back up and try again.

Its little wonder that they call it an extreme sport, and it should be proudly noted that the Aussie riders that were in the show were just as extreme and more than willing to push the envelope with the best in the world.

Apart from an intermission and short pauses in the show to give away freebies, including a motorbike for one lucky young lad, plus a bit of gratuitous violence in the form of a sword fight with volunteer combatants tied at the ankles, for the next two and a half hours there was not much time where there was not a bike and rider in the air, or, for the more discerning male adults in the crowd, the Crusty Babes dancing on top of the landing platforms. With the sun finally setting, the show came to an end with the full compliment of riders jumping in quick succession with up to three or four in the air at any one time, it was a good finale to an event with enough variety that it certainly held your interest, plus not going on too long that it became boring. I don’t think anyone went home that evening disappointed, and full credit has to go to some of the world’s best riders and Crusty Demons for making it a great show.
