Located
not far from the coast on the Oxley Hwy, Long Flat offers riders coming in from
all directions quite a bit of variety with regards to the roads used to get to
the rally site, a bit of planning to allow a couple of hours extra up your
sleeve, can see you doing detours on the way that take in just about all kinds
of roads to suit your riding style, and with the added bonus of plenty of small
pubs along most of them there is no real need to rush the journey. Once you
arrive at the Travellers Rest Hotel and the rally site, it’s all pretty straight
forward, pay at the gate, and ride down to where you want to camp, put the tent
up and then stroll back to the pub, couldn’t be any easier. I reckon this rally
attracts a bigger variety of riders on different makes of bikes than most of the
others; simply because, the getting there is so good a part of it, no matter
what you ride.
Having arrived a bit late in the afternoon, due to the aforementioned pub stops and one of the Wildcats taking a slightly different route than the rest of us by detouring into the scenery to do a bit of gardening, meant that I unfortunately missed the Show and Shine, apparently there was a damn good selection of bikes, and some well deserved trophies were handed out later on in the evening. Plenty of good quality tucker was available to fill those last few gaps that the grog couldn’t get to and as soon as the sun dropped behind the hills at the back the temperature dropped a bit and we all enjoyed a pleasant balmy evening listening to the bands and bullshitting to mates, add to that, the lucky door prizes from the entry tickets seeing some very nice gear being won, to be honest, it don’t get much better.
Even though the drought has got a grip on most of the state, there was still plenty of water in the river and swimming hole for those with a liking for getting wet, and for those that like seeing others getting wet, there was, of course the wet T-shirt comp. With a substantial amount of money already in the kitty for the winner it quickly just about doubled as donations from the crowd filled the whip round bucket, being aware of the drought effect and water shortages, the contestants were quite happy to be doused with a small bottle of water, obviously a little bit goes a long way, because as soon as the first few drops of water hit them, they immediately ripped off their saturated clothes, then, with the feeling of the deluge on their naked bodies having had an equally desirable effect on them they then began to cavort around the stage, it had be one of the most energetic wet T-shirt comps the crowd had seen in a long while, and the end result was a three way split for the winners, no doubt caused in no small measure by the splits that one of the ladies did as a finale.
Some time after midnight saw most of us heading for bed, however a few decided to sleep al-fresco having carried on the party to the point where they sort of forgot where they had pitched the tent. Like a lot of others it was an early kick-off for us, and, seeing as our ride home took us past Nabiac we decided to call in at the Motor Cycle Museum and get a bit of a blast from the past looking at the models we used to ride, I highly recommend it and it’s more than well worth the stop if your in the area.
All up a damn good back to basics type of rally and well worth putting on next years roster.
