Narrabri Benefit Ride/Poker Run

As the newest member of the Wandering Walgett Wildcats; what a weekend it has been. It was a lonely ride by myself from Gilgandra to Coonamble but a lovely man by the name of Mond was there to escort me to Walgett for my first night at the club house. With Pizza, a few drinks and some dancing on the menu it made for an exciting night.

Up with the birds on Saturday morning we all headed off to Narrabri.  Before we could even leave Walgett the first brake down for the day was on, with Splitty’s trike spatting and rattling things were not looking to good for him….so we left him behind hoping that he would catch up some were along the way.

Off to Narrabri we go for a Benefit Poker run for Jamie and Di Smith who had a sad story to tell but enough about that we where all there to help make their day.

Starting at the Tourist Hotel 11am with 33 bikes, we ploughed out of Narrabri towards our first stop, The Royal Hotel Wee Waa. A warm morning with no clouds in sight our thirst was for refreshments and that we did. At this stop the first raffle was up and running and was lucky enough to be won by one of our Walgett riders, Alan Humphries. Guess who finely shows up YES its Splitty with the trike back on track.

So after quenching our thirst it was time to get back on the bikes.

Off to the Pilliga Pub where the first smell you got when you got off your bike was the BBQ cooking out the back off the pub….The talk was on with everyone comparing Poker hands trying to see who could be in front but with two more hands to go it was still anyone’s game.

With the food eaten and another raffle done (by the way won by a wildcat, SLIP this time) we there off to Cuttabri Wine Shanty and a shanty it was but with a wonderful atmosphere we could have just camped there the night and I think everyone would have been happy to stay. That was not going to be the case we had to make it back to Narrabri yet.

So after a few more drinks and some great yarn with some new mates I meet along the way we were back on the road to Narrabri. They were in such a hurry to get back they left Splitty,  the back up car and me behind for dust. After doing the main street twice we finely found the right pub where everyone was relaxing and winding down from their big ride. Entertainment had stated Julie’s Karaoke, yes I said karaoke, well some people think they sound fantastic but maybe I might be just tone deaf.

Raffle tickets were being sold and there were 108 prizes to be won…Guess who won the first prize YES it was me…one pair of Oakey sunnies. As more numbers were called out more and more people had smiles on the faces, poor Julie couldn’t keep up handing out all those goodies.

Anyway none of the wildcats were lucky enough to win first place in the Poker hand but get this they got second and third…good on ya guys Rowdy and Slip.

By this time of the night it was time for another big event in wildcat history.

Rowdy after 14 year put his beard up for a biding war amongst the wildcat members the night before and managed to raise another $500 dollars to go towards the benefit. (He reminded me that the MO had been there for over 30 years.)

SO it was time to shave it off. I must say with the beard off it took 10 years of age away as well. (He turned into a baby face.)  It will be interesting to see it on E-bay, the beard that is.

To finish off the night with Baylzey’s Music Mix and there was much dancing  done.

To rap up a great weekend I must thank all the organizer of the Poker Run, the friendly people I meet along the way and thanks to the wildcat members who welcomed me into their family.

Dee xoxo
