If you’re into what the general population considers being sports, i.e., football, cricket, tennis etc, on arrival, you could have been forgiven for being surprised to see a total lack of footy jumpers, track suits and running shoes. However, if you consider riding, drinking and partying with a no bullshit crowd to be your kind of sport, you knew straight away from the leather jackets, johnny rebs and the lack of political correctness, that, you were definitely in the right place, when you turned up at Pearlbrook for the VVMC Sportsman’s Night.

Typical of the organisation with the Vets, everything was already in place and running like a well oiled machine when I arrived, after setting the tent up accompanied by the sound of the stream that cuts through the site bubbling away in the background, it was a short walk up to the Clubhouse for a drink, say a few g’days and take some snapshots. As more bikes started to arrive I took a stroll up the road leading into the site to get a few ride in shots, it was only when I got my watch out, after what I thought was about a half an hour of checking out the scenery surrounding the area between snapping a few pics of riders, that I realised I’d been out there for well over an hour, obviously its very easy to lose track of time in such a pleasant place, and I think that makes up a big part of this Vets rally site being one of the best in the country.

When I arrived back at the clubhouse the earlier bit of heat had gone, and by the time late afternoon rolled around most of the arrivals had set up camp and were getting into party mode, roast beef rolls were included in the entry price and soon a queue formed up keeping the cooks busy knocking out bags of chips to go with them, after joining the queue that was moving along at a good pace and a bit of laughing, joking and putting shit on each other, it was not long before I was back in my chair getting stuck into a good feed. With a couple of TV’s inside, and a big screen set up on the stage outside showing bike videos, quite a few people were sitting back and relaxing that way as they waited for the planned entertainment to start.

Around about eight thirty the emcee announced the start of the show, and as the crowd moved over to the stage to get a good possie, the first of the entertainers appeared silhouetted against a backlit screen, when the screen lifted the crowd was more than pleased with what lay behind and she certainly set the stage for the rest of the night. With the trio of very talented artists keeping the crowd entertained with the contents of their toy boxes during the three sessions that lasted through till nearly midnight, coupled with a duo of very easy on the eyes young ladies working as waitresses fetching your drinks during the breaks, it certainly made for a very good night.

All up, I’m pretty sure that the Vets can guarantee that nobody went back to their swags and tents disappointed with the show that they had hosted. So, if you didn’t get there this time, keep an eye out for the next one and instead of just listening to your mates tell you what you missed, you can be the one telling the story.

Thanks to the VVMC NSW Chapter for a damn good night, see you there next time.
