Sturgis - the trip home.....
Having spent five days at Sturgis, Kaz and I packed up
our gear and headed off towards and into the Rockies. Words fail me in
describing the ride through this part of the US, there were so many times after
coming down from the top of a mountain section into the valleys below, that I
could easily have chucked a u-turn and gone back up to do it all again. I reckon
that part of the trip brought home more than any other time, the sheer pleasure
of actually being in the scenery as you ride, as opposed to just passing through
it whilst inside a car.
With the Rockies behind us it was into the high desert country of the Indian Nations, and a change of scenery in the form of mesas and canyons, a detour into the Grand Canyon proved that no number of photographs or films can really describe the immensity and stark beauty of the place. A few detours onto the old sections of Route 66 rounded off the trip with us returning to San Louis Obispo for a couple of days before dropping off the bikes at the dealer for him to sell on for us, and then boarding the plane to get back to good old Oz.
A quick report like this does not even go close to describing all the things we saw and the people we met, it is certainly something that everyone should try and get to do at least once. I honestly think that Sturgis was really just the icing on the cake as far as the whole thing went, and to just have done the rally without the riding part of it would have meant missing out on seeing some spectacular scenery, meeting people who bent over backwards to help us have a great time, and just the sheer pleasure of riding a motorcycle on great roads for a change.
In closing there are a few people that deserve a huge vote of thanks for all they did for us.
Powerhouse Motorcycles. at 2800 Riverside Ave. Paso Robles California. www.powerhouseonline.com Thanks Walter for making it so easy buying and insuring the bikes that we used.
Garrett Honda Polaris. at 563 North Main. Nephi, Utah. Thanks folks for doing the oil change service on the spot for Kaz’s bike.
Capitol Motorcycle. at 1115 Greeley Hwy. Cheyenne Colorado. Thanks for all the help when the bikes battery packed it in. The owner, Lee Cederburg is a true gentleman and an fine ambassador for those few remaining bike shops that actually care about the customer, his memories and books of memorabilia gathered over more years than he probably cares to remember are priceless, thank you Lee for letting Kaz and I share them, also thanks to Lee’s mechanic Vince Defler, another fine gentleman, for the care and concern you showed us, it was a pleasure meeting you both.
No Name City. 20899 Pleasant Valley Drive. Sturgis. www.SturgisCamping.com Thanks to Matt and all the staff for providing us with all that we could require whilst camping in your park. Matt runs a very well appointed clean and quiet camp, ideal if you don’t want to stay at any of the bigger sites during Sturgis, Kaz & I have no reservations in recommending Matt and he can be contacted at camping@nonamecity.com
Also thanks to all the many other people whose paths we crossed for making our stay over there a really pleasant experience.
