WALGETT WEEKEND
Pete
Myler, John Sargent, Director Sarg and Jos left Bathurst 8am heading for Walgett.
They picked up Bruce Mendes in Orange while the heavens opened up. Apparently
it absolutely bucketed down and Pete Myler decided to turn around, 3 or 4 times,
only to keep following and arrived in sunny Dubbo where Peter Honberg (Burger)
and friend Karen, the Angry Ant and myself were waiting. I waved them on while
we suited up and then caught up. Burger and Karen had other plans for the
afternoon but decided to ride to Gilgandra with us. We had a 1/2 hour break at
the roadhouse at Gil while the Sargents caught up with relatives so Pete Myler
hung his socks out to dry on the picnic table. Due to the early nasty weather we
were running late so we bolted to Walgett, passing a few wicked looking storms,
arriving around 2pm. As we rode into Rowdy's, the sky opened up again allowing
enough time for coffee and a wee break. When things cleared up we went to the
showground to meet up with Larry and Sandra, Glen Macdonald (Little Buddy),
several riders from Armidale way and a pride of WILDCATS of the WANDERING WALGETT variety. We spent the rest of the afternoon chatting, eating and
partaking of a few cleansing cordials, while waiting for the evening gymkhana.
Just as Rowdy started warming his bike up, the skies opened once again and
the wind blew about 1000 kph, so the plans got water logged somewhat. Not to be
out done, Rowdy delighted the crowd at the bar by smoking it up a little and
then the locals formed a pathway thru the bar so we could ride out to the road
on concrete. It was about this time Big Pete and little Barb Bassett arrived,
having ridden thru those storms that the rest of as luckily missed. Pete told me
at one stage it was hailing pretty badly and Barb was holding her hand up to his
face as a shield (ain't love grand!) to protect him. At any way it was great to
see Pete and Barb and catch up on a few things. Back at Rowdy and Kate's the
serious stuff got going with a few drinks, a Chinese Banquet, a few drinks, some
had a spa and a few more drinks before bed. With 34 adults staying, there were
beds and bodies everywhere. A pretty slow start in the morning for some reason
and then a beautiful BACON, SAUSAGE and EGG BBQ brekkie followed by our
monthly meeting, where it was announced we had signed up 8 new members for the
weekend. A quick run out to the show ground to pack up the marquee and then
made our way back to Dubbo in some glorious Autumn weather where AA and myself
pulled up leaving the others to ride off into the unknown with some threatening
clouds hanging around. It absolutely pissed down In Dubbo about 20 minutes after
the guys left but Sarg tells me they got no more rain on the way back to
Bathurst. A nice ride and a great weekend, thanks for your hospitality and your
company.
